Chapter 6

The screams become louder as we walk further down the hall towards the lit door. The sound guys did an amazing job hiding the speakers. Danny and I step up to the door, looking in to a surgery center. On the table lies a body, we can’t tell if it is male or female. At the head of the table a doctor stands, a drill in his hand.

“Oh, you’re here! Come in, come in. No need to be shy.” The mask over his face muffles his words some. It is hard to see him, standing on the other side of the table due to the bright light between him and us. “Everyone here? Good, we can get started.”

He turns on his drill and shouts, “This should only hurt for a minute or ten.” And pushes the drill into the person’s forehead, right between the eyes. A blood-curdling scream rises from the table as blood spurts out.

Behind me I hear one of the girls, Amy or Kelly, vomiting. I swallow, breathing through my mouth. “Danny, let’s go. Please?”

I look over to where Danny had been standing to find him already making his way to the door. Glad to know where I stand. I run after him.

“Hey! I thought we said stick together?” I grab his arm, and he jumps with a small yelp. He must be really freaked to react like that.

“Did you hear the scream? That wasn’t a mannequin. It was real.” He looks back over his shoulder to the room.

“It’s just special effects, Danny. You know they couldn’t use real people for that. This is all for show.”

He shakes his head. “You’re wrong. This is wrong, it feels wrong.”

I rub his arm, “Okay. Let’s just get everyone together and go to the doors at the end of the hall. There should be an exit there.”

He nods, but looks nervously around. It feels kind of funny to be the calm one, not freaked out like he is.

“That was wrong, really wrong. You guys missed it, he started screwing things into the holes, and with each one he would laugh in this low creepy laugh, while the body would scream and then groan.” Jaxon holds onto Amy’s hand like it’s a life line. He looks around, “Hey, where are Kelly and Adrian?”

“They were in there with you, right?” I look around the hall, empty minus the remnants of parties and vandals from years gone by. I really don’t want to go into either room in this hall.

“No,” Amy draws it out like she is unsure. “They left with you, didn’t they?”

I look at Danny and then at the couple next to us and shake my head. “I don’t think so. We came out here, and no one was around.”

“Maybe they went back to the other room?” Amy says, her voice shaking a little.

“I’ll run up and look,” Jaxon says.

Amy grabs his arm, “No! We have to stay together.”

Jaxon pats her hand, “Relax. I’m just running up the hall, I will be in eyesight all along.
